MORTARA ON THE PACE IN IMOLA
French-Italian driver Edoardo Mortara has qualified fifth and seventh for the fifth and sixth races of the Italian Formula Renault Championship at Imola this weekend.
The Prema Powerteam driver is currently second in the championship after taking two podiums so far this season. His aim at Imola is to improve on an already impressive championship position.
Imola, home to the San Marino Grand Prix a month ago, is a demanding high-speed circuit that requires plenty of commitment and a perfect set-up.
Like all the tracks this year it is brand new to Edoardo, who comes straight out of karting. He set fourth-fastest time in free practice on Friday less than three-tenths of a second off the quickest time. The weather for race day tomorrow is expected to be warm, with the possibility of gusts of wind.
Edoardo admitted that he made a couple of small mistakes during his qualifying laps, but he remains confident of two strong races tomorrow on a circuit that he loves. The qualifying system for Imola was new to the championship, using a single session in which each driver¹s two fastest times would determine their place in race one and race two respectively.
This system was first used in the Formula Renault UK championship and is now set to be adopted for the rest of the season.
The 19 year-old said: ³I think I could have gone faster on both of my flying laps, but it was certainly not a disaster. I took a little bit of time to adapt to the new qualifying session, but I would like to thank the Prema Powerteam who did a fantastic job and has given me an excellent car. Now it¹s down to me. Tomorrow will be a long and tough day with two races. The important thing is not to lose any places at the start, and then see which opportunities present themselves from there. I¹m feeling calm, and as always I¹ll be aiming for the podium.
