MORTARA ENJOYS SUCCESSFUL WEEKEND AT BRANDS HATCH
Signature team driver Edoardo Mortara has enjoyed a successful weekend at Brands Hatch in England, round seven of the Formula 3 Euroseries out of 10. He finished both races just off the podium in fourth position, to head home occupying second place in the championship.
Having held the championship lead since early on in the season, Edoardo found out that he was no longer in front the day before free practice began at Brands Hatch, when a rival was given back the 10 points that were previously docked as a result of a technical infringement.
Nonetheless, the French-Italian driver remained upbeat heading to Brands Hatch, the scene of his first ever Formula 3 Euroseries race win last year en route to the rookie title. After a summer pause of just over a month, the 21 year-old was keen to get back into the thick of the action and discover some of the developments that had been carried out on his car and its Volkswagen engine.
He used the free practice session on Friday to get back to grips with the car and the Brands Hatch Indy circuit, which is less than two kilometres long. Nonetheless, it is an extremely varied track with several different types of bends and cambers to provide a stern challenge for every driver.
Because of the short nature of the track, the gaps were extremely close in qualifying – which was split into two groups. Edoardo qualified fourth in his group, which translated to eighth on the grid for race one. The competition was so close that the Signature team driver was separated from pole position by just seven-hundredths of a second.
He made an excellent getaway for the 58-lap race and was soon up to sixth. A couple of assertive moves saw him eventually climb up to fourth where he ended the opening race with a solid haul of points.
“That was exactly the sort of solid start I needed,” said Edoardo. “I concentrated on doing the best job I could but most of all staying out of trouble. I felt comfortable with the car, but I didn’t want to take too many risks.”
Edoardo started Sunday morning’s race two from fifth on the grid, but was up to fourth at the end of the first lap. He pushed as hard as he could but could not quite reach the podium. Once again it was an animated race, in which Edoardo enjoyed a close battle with his rivals.
“I think if it had rained, as we were expecting, then we could have finished higher up the order,” he concluded. “But I’m satisfied with our fourth places: it was a useful weekend’s work and now we are well placed heading into the next round, where we will be aiming to get back onto the podium.”
The next round of the Formula 3 Euroseries takes place from September 20-21 in Barcelona. The Spanish track was the scene of a win for Edoardo last year, thanks to an inspired performance in race one.
