Q and A with Edo Mortara
 How are you feeling ahead of this fifth round of the F3 Euroseries?
“I’m feeling quite calm and confident, but also realistic. As always, it’s not going to be an easy race weekend as the opposition is very tough, and we are still in the early days of development of our Volkswagen engine. So we will do our best, but naturally we’re not automatically expecting to win. If we can get on the podium that would be fantastic, but the principal objective is to hang onto, or preferably extend, our championship lead.”
What is the Zandvoort circuit like?
“It is one of the classics on the Formula 3 calendar, and there is a real sense of history to it. There are a few places where you can overtake, such as the famous ‘Tarzan’ hairpin. But there are also a number of specific peculiarities about the circuit to watch out for. It is very close to the sea and the beach, so in the past there have been problems with sand blowing onto the circuit – which is normally only an issue at places like Bahrain! Zandvoort is also one of those areas that have quite unpredictable weather conditions, so anything can happen really.”
What has the car and the team been like so far this year?
“I cannot overstate just what a good job Signature and especially Volkswagen has done so far this year. For us to be in the position that we are in now – with a 15-point lead in the championship – is absolutely fantastic. I don’t think that anybody expected that to happen so soon after the start of the year, myself included.”
Have you changed your approach and driving style to match that situation?
“I think so, yes. As a driver you learn all the time – and this is the year where I have learnt the most. Championships are won through putting in consistent results, and this is foremost in my mind at the moment. My will to win is as strong as ever, but I have stepped back from the mentality that I have to win every race at all costs. Now I aim to win if it is possible, but if it is not possible then I am happy to step back and take whatever is achievable. I think I have become more focused and more tactical as a driver.”
How have you spent the time since the Norisring, where you had a fantastic drive up the field?
“Yes, I enjoyed that race! There’s actually not been a lot of time spare since then, so I have just concentrated on my physical and mental fitness. Such an intensively competitive championship like the F3 Euroseries requires maximum concentration at all times, so it’s really important to keep on top of all your training. I’m in better shape physically now than I have ever been, and I am sure that this has played an important role in what we have managed to achieve to date.”
