MORTARA EXTENDS F3 EUROSERIES LEAD IN GERMANY
 Signature Team driver Edoardo Mortara has extended his lead of the prestigious Formula 3 Euroseries after two excellent races at the fourth meeting of the season in Germany.
The French-Italian driver claimed fourth in race one and third in race two at the Norisring: his sixth podium of the season. He now holds a 15-point advantage over Nico Hulkenburg in the overall standings, having started the weekend with a lead of 13 points.
The Norisring is a notoriously unforgiving circuit near Nuremburg, where the walls take no mistakes and extreme precision is called for. Despite these challenging conditions, Edoardo was faultless all weekend – which was held in warm and dry weather.
During free practice, he worked on his race set-up with used tyres and concentrated on preparing for qualifying. Friday’s qualifying session started off well, with Edoardo setting fourth-quickest time straight away. However, the rapid Norisring circuit always produces extremely closely matched times meaning that Edoardo was eventually bumped down to 10th. He set his quickest lap on his own, whereas the fastest laps always come from having an all-important tow. Having tried to improve on his time in the closing stages, Edoardo unfortunately spun and so remained 10th.
Undeterred, he approached race one with confidence and within 10 laps he had climbed into the top six after a great start. A few laps later Edoardo claimed fourth: a position he maintained to the end with strong race pace. The five points earned meant that he extended his championship lead, but a surprise was in store for the following day.
A pile-up on the first corner meant that race two was red-flagged almost before it had begun. Edoardo’s car was damaged in the carnage, but a great job from the Signature mechanics meant that he was able to restart with a car that was almost as good as new.
Because of the time lost, only half the race distance was run with just half points awarded. Edoardo was soon up to third and maintained a consistent pace to score his sixth podium in eight races and further extend his championship lead by two points.
“It wasn’t always an easy weekend for us, but it was a very good one as we all kept focused and concentrated on doing our jobs,” said Edoardo. “Even when things went not according to plan, such as 10th in qualifying and the pile-up at the first corner of race two, everybody remained calm and positive – which really underlines the professionalism as well as the pace of Volkswagen and Signature. I’d like to thank them for another excellent job and now we look forward to the next round of the championship.”
The next meeting of the series – which marks the halfway point of the championship – takes place at the Dutch circuit of Zandvoort from July 11-13.
