Mortara aims to build on championship lead at Pau
Edoardo Mortara, who currently jointly leads the overall Formula 3 Euroseries standings after two race meetings, is aiming to consolidate his advantage at the third appointment of the year: the legendary French street circuit of Pau.
Mortara is once more driving for the Bourges-based Signature team in 2008, with which he has been on the podium at every race meeting held so far this year. This season, the team is using Volkswagen power for the first time on the 20-race calendar, matched to the latest Dallara chassis.
Pau, in the south of France, is a classic track on the Formula 3 schedule. Being a street circuit, the surfaces are bumpy and challenging, with a wide variety of tight corners that demand precision. Previous winners of this prestigious event include Grand Prix stars such as Lewis Hamilton, and more than one driver has described the 2.7-kilometre Pau street circuit as an even greater challenge than Monaco’s famous Grand Prix circuit.
The comparatively low speeds and scant grip call for a low-downforce set-up, but identifying the correct suspension settings is always a compromise on the uneven surfaces. Luckily, Edoardo excels in these challenging conditions and he is looking forward to facing his rivals on the streets. With a solid joint lead of the championship, he knows that he will have to keep up a good pace without taking any unnecessary risks.
“I have to say that I’m really looking forward to racing at Pau because it’s a magnificent circuit and a lot of fun,” said Edoardo. “I love circuits that are a little bit different and where you have to improvise a bit, so I think that we should be well-suited to the conditions. Both the Signature team and particularly Volkswagen have done a fantastic job so far this year, but of course the conditions we will face in Pau will be somewhat different to the conditions we have experienced so far this year. This means that we can take absolutely nothing for granted, and we will have to work extremely hard from the very beginning of the weekend in order to ensure that we make the most of every opportunity. From my point of view, the objective is to finish the weekend still in the lead or at least in touch with the lead of the championship – so I will be driving with that in mind.”
A qualifying session on Saturday morning will determine the grid for Saturday’s race one in the afternoon. The grid for race two on Sunday is decided by the result of the race on Saturday – but with the top eight grid positions reversed.
