Disappointing weekend for Carbone at Spa Photo NewsUltimate Signature team driver Fabio Carbone suffered a disappointing Spa-Francorchamps race weekend – the second round of the World Series by Renault – after somebody else’s accident knocked him out of race one and he failed to get away from the grid at the start of race two. An electrical problem meant that Fabio was able to take no further part in proceedings, and his race was over before it had even begun.

On Saturday, Fabio made a good getaway for the opening race, but two other competitors crashed in front of him and took him out of the race at the first corner. Spa is one of the world’s greatest circuits, combining some fast and sweeping corners with breathtaking changes in elevation. The compression at Eau Rouge is bigger than that of any other race circuit in current regular use, making it a massive challenge for drivers and teams.

Unfortunately Fabio did not get a chance to find out. “It’s been an incredibly disappointing weekend,” said the Brazilian. “During race one, there was nothing I could do: I did everything possible to avoid a collision bit there was nowhere to go. At the start of race two, I tried to pull away and there was nothing. I got pushed to the pits but it was impossible to fix the problem in the time available.

Let’s just hope that we’ve used up all our bad luck for the season now and that we have a good run at the next round in Monaco. What makes it even more frustrating is the fact that the potential of the car is obviously extremely quick.” Fabio’s weekend got off to a bad start when the qualifying session on Saturday morning was continually interrupted by yellow flags and stoppages.

As a result, he could only qualify 18th for the opening race, and the unfortunate result of that race meant that he would start towards the back for race two. Philippe Sinault, the joint team principal of Ultimate Signature (together with Barry Walsh) commented: “It’s just been one of those weekends here, which can happen sometimes when you take on the challenge of a brand new formula. We now need to work out exactly what happened with Fabio’s car, in order to avoid any repeat of this problem in the future.

Our next race now is Monaco, and we know that Fabio is very good at street circuits so we will be aiming for a strong performance in the Principality.” Round three of the World Series by Renault takes place at the famous Monaco Grand Prix weekend from May 24-25.
