Another succesful weekend for Mortara at Mugello
Formula 3 Euroseries driver Edoardo Mortara has accomplished his mission on round two of the series at Mugello: to maintain the overall championship lead.
Thanks to a fourth place finish in race one and a third place in race two, the French-Italian continues to lead the championship jointly with Finn Mika Maki. The Signature team driver did a flawless job at the Italian circuit to ensure that his ambitions have remained firmly on track. He and Maki now have a total of 19 points, five points clear of their closest challenger.
Mugello, close to Florence, is a popular venue for Formula 1 testing due to its technical nature, combining fast straights with slower and more complicated sections. It is a circuit that Edoardo already has some knowledge of from his days in Italian Formula Renault, and he was able to put this knowledge to good use during the highly-competitive Formula 3 Euroseries weekend.
After refining the car’s set-up during free practice, Edoardo qualified in seventh place for race one. Combining speed with common sense, Edoardo drove a mature race to fourth place – which would ensure that he started race two from fith on the grid (as under the Euroseries rules the top eight finishers are reversed to form the grid for the second race).
During the second race on Sunday morning, Edoardo made tactical progress in order to ensure a podium finish and a solid points haul from the weekend.
“It was virtually a perfect couple of races for us,” said Edoardo, whose Signature team car is powered by Volkswagen’s new Formula 3 engine this year. “From the start, we concentrated on doing a tactical job in order to achieve our key objective, which was keeping the lead of the drivers’ championship. We just tried to avoid any trouble or heroics: the target was to do another solid job. Thanks to a fantastic car from the Signature team and Volkswagen we were able to achieve our goal, and I’d like to thank everybody who made it possible. It’s been a very good start to the year, but we’ve still got a lot to learn. Now, we just need to ensure that we stay fully concentrated and that we make the most of the great equipment we have at our disposal.” The next round of the Formula 3 Euroseries takes place at the famous French street circuit of Pau, from May 30-June 1.
