FABIO SET FOR WORLD SERIES BY RENAULT DEBUT AT MONZA
 The opening round of the 2008 World Series by Renault gets underway at the legendary Monza circuit in Italy this weekend, which has written some of the most famous history in the world of motorsport.
Another piece of history is set to take place on the Italian circuit, with the very first race of the Ultimate Signature team – led by Brazilian star Fabio Carbone. This Anglo-French alliance is born out of a collaboration between Ultimate Motorsport, which competes on the British Formula 3 Championship, and the French Signature team, which is contesting the Formula 3 Euroseries.
Carbone has spent the last two years racing in Japan, where he finished second overall on the Japanese GT championship last year as well as contesting the Formula Nippon Championship. Fabio is also a former Marlboro Masters Formula 3 Grand Prix winner, as well as a pole-sitter at Macau. For 2008 he has a brand new challenge as he returns to race in Europe.
Monza, the spiritual home of motor racing in Italy, is well-known for its famous banking (last used in 1969) and fast straights that will allow the 3.5-litre World Series by Renault car to use every one of its 425 horsepower. In order to keep average speeds down there are some chicanes on other parts of the circuit, but Monza remains a low downforce track where much of the lap is spent at full throttle. This results in very little grip through the corners, so a lot of care is needed when establishing a race set-up, particularly as there are a number of high kerbs on the slower sections of the lap.
The Ultimate Signature team is starting the season on a high, following a fastest time for Carbone at the last pre-event test in Barcelona. Even though there is a lot still to learn, the team is hopeful for another front-running performance when it comes to actually racing.
Carbone commented: “We’ve done a lot of hard work leading up to this race, and I’m sure we will discover a lot more things as we go along. Nonetheless, I’m convinced that there’s a lot of potential in both ourselves and the car, so we will approach this weekend calmly and see what comes out of it. The team is new but there is a lot of experience behind it, so I’m sure we will learn quickly.”
There are two races at every World Series by Renault meeting, which takes in some of Europe’s most prestigious circuits. Previous graduates of the series include top stars such as Robert Kubica, making this championship one of the
final stepping stones to Formula 1.
