Carbone quickest in Barcelona test
Brazilian star Fabio Carbone has got his World Series by Renault campaign off to the best possible start by posting the fastest time in the final pre-season test at Barcelona.
The Ultimate Signature driver, returning to Europe after two years of racing in Japan, gradually built up to his best time on the Spanish circuit – which hosted the entire World Series by Renault field.
This was despite a scare on the previous day when Fabio’s car briefly caught fire leaving the pit lane. The blaze was quickly extinguished by the Ultimate Signature mechanics and Fabio was able to continue his testing programme uninterrupted.
The 27 year-old said: “Of course testing is only testing: what really matters is how we perform during the races. But we’re obviously all very pleased to have put in such a promising performance before the season starts. Hopefully this result shows that we will have the speed to be fighting for the top positions once the season gets underway.”
The cars were still so new that they were running with unpainted carbon fibre bodywork, but it was a valuable opportunity for Fabio to accumulate more testing kilometres at the wheel of the new World Series by Renault car – which is based on a Formula 1 chassis.
“With testing time so restricted, it’s vitally important to make the most of the time you have,” continued Fabio. “For me, the really positive thing about the Barcelona test is that we were able to work through the programme that we intended and make some useful progress. Our quickest time is proof that the work we did was very much in the right direction.”
For Ultimate, which is contesting only its first season in the highly competitive World Series by Renault, Fabio’s time was a major achievement. Nonetheless, the real test will come at the opening round of the series this weekend, at the fabled Italian circuit of Monza.
