Brazilian star Fabio Carbone will race in the prestigious World Series by Renault this year, as part of the newly-formed Ultimate Signature team.

Ultimate Signature is the result of a collaboration between Ultimate Motorsport – which starred on the British Formula 3 Championship last year – and the well-known Signature team in France, which has competed on the Formula 3 Euroseries for many years as well as winning the Formula Renault V6 championship in 2003. Fabio’s team mate for the 2008 Renault season will be a fellow Brazilian, Claudio Cantelli.

The World Series by Renault – just one rung below Formula 1 on the motorsport ladder – takes in some of Europe’s most prestigious circuits such as Monza, the Nurburgring and Monaco. There will be a total of nine race meetings in 2008, with two races per weekend. The first round takes place at Monza at the end of April, and the championship concludes in Spain at the end of October.

Former winners of the series include F1 stars such as Robert Kubica and Heikki Kovalainen. The 12-valve 3.5-litre bespoke cars are built using Formula 1 technology. Thanks to the use of E85 bioethanol as well, these cars are capable of putting out in excess of 500 horsepower.

The 27 year-old Carbone comes to the World Series by Renault after a successful year in Japan, where he raced in the Formula Renault Championship and finished second in the Japanese GT Championship. The talented Brazilian, a former Zandvoort Masters F3 winner, has tested World Series by Renault cars in the past and he is also a former pole position-holder in the prestigious Macau Formula 3 Grand Prix – where he finished second in 2003.

Carbone said: “I’m delighted to have this opportunity to return to race in Europe after some very enjoyable seasons in Japan. The value of the World Series by Renault can be seen just by looking at the list of previous winners. Ultimate Signature is a new team, but there is a lot experience behind it. Together with my own racing experience, I feel very confident that we can put together a very strong package.”

Ultimate Motorsport team principal Barry Walsh commented: “After a successful debut season in 2007, we are proud to have secured the services of Fabio. We have been following his career for a while now, and I’m sure we will be able to benefit from his experience this year, in our first season of World Series by Renault.”
