MORTARA IS ROOKIE CHAMPION WITH SECOND PLACE IN GERMANY!
Signature Team driver Edoardo Mortara has claimed the biggest victory of his short career by taking the rookie championship in the Formula 3 Euroseries at the final race of the season in Hockenheim. At the end of a hugely successful year, Edoardo has sealed the prestigious rookie title with two wins and two podiums – in only his second season of racing cars.
He also became the only rookie ever to claim a win in race one on Saturday, thanks to a magnificent victory in Barcelona last month, and he holds the best qualifying record of all the rookie drivers in the F3 Euroseries this year.
Hockenheim hosts the German Grand Prix and it combines a tight and twisty technical section, in front of huge grandstands, with some flat-out straights. This requires a great deal of versatility from both the driver and the car in terms of set-up.
Edoardo felt immediately at ease on the demanding circuit, eventually taking a satisfactory seventh place on the grid for race one. Mindful that he had to get to the finish in order to safeguard his championship chances, Edoardo drove a mature race to finish sixth. This meant that he would start third on the grid for race two, which was watched by an enthusiastic crowd of more than 100,000 people.
Edoardo made an excellent start to take the lead, which he maintained for 22 laps. He enjoyed an excellent battle with Sebastien Buemi, but decided not to risk anything with the rookie championship at stake. Edoardo eventually settled for a hard-earned second place at the end of a thrilling race.
The 20 year-old French-Italian driver commented: “It’s been an amazing weekend, which has culminated in the most significant prize of my career to date. The fact that I am rookie champion has not quite sunk in yet, but it feels amazing to be part of such a fantastic tradition in this extremely competitive formula. Most of all I would like to thank the Signature team, which has done a brilliant and professional job all year to put me in the this position. As for the races this weekend, I was only focussed on taking no risks and getting the job done to bring home this title. I’m delighted that we’ve been able to do it!”
Edoardo will now spend some time at home concentrating on his physical fitness and preparation for the 2008 season, with the aim of consolidating this latest well-deserved success.
