CARBONE JUST OFF THE POINTS AT SUGO
Up and coming Brazilian Fabio Carbone was unable to underline his clear potential at Sugo, round seven of the Formula Nippon Championship, and ended up just off the points after being caught out by traffic in qualifying.
Sugo is one of the most complex circuits that the drivers face all year, and the narrow track is renowned for its series of complex corners. This makes it almost impossible to overtake, so qualifying is all-important.
During free practice, Fabio worked on finding the best high-downforce configuration for his Dandelion Racing, in order to provide optimal grip through all the corners. Sugo is such a tight track, that the teams normally
use maximum downforce.
Fabio’s hard work had the desired effect, as the car was consistently fast during free practice and qualifying. The Brazilian was on course for a strong grid position, but then he was caught out by some traffic in the crucial final stages of qualifying. The lap was ruined and Fabio consequently had to settle for 11th place on the grid: an unfair reflection of his real potential.
With Sugo being such a twisty circuit, the Brazilian faced an uphill struggle to make up places. He made a fantastic getaway, but at the first corner he was boxed in behind a slower car, losing two places.
What made his task even harder was the fact that the Sugo race did not feature a mandatory pitstop as usual, depriving Carbone and Dandelion of the chance to formulate an effective race strategy to move themselves up the field. After a frustrating race, he nonetheless ended up ninth just missing out on a point.
Fabio said: “It’s clear that the real damage was done during the last lap of qualifying: without the traffic I’m confident that we could have been challenging at the front. Then when you qualify further down the grid, you make yourself more vulnerable to incidents with other traffic, as happened to me in the first corner. But that¹s life and that¹s racing. We¹ll be back
feeling even more confident for the next round, and I firmly believe that we will be contenders for victory once more. “
Round eight the penultimate round of the Formula Nippon Championship takes place at Motegi from October 20-21.
