SOLID POINTS FOR CARBONE AT MOTEGI Photo NewsBrazil’s Fabio Carbone finished just off the podium last weekend at the seventh round of the Japanese GT Championship, driving as usual for the prestigious Nakajima Racing team. Along with his French team-mate Loic Duval, Fabio started the weekend with a positive free practice session at the technical Japanese circuit. Both drivers were confident of a strong performance in qualifying – which eventually resulted in a fine third on the grid, despite the five kilograms of success ballast carried by the crew. Fabio started the race, and when the lights went to green he successfully maintained the place into the first corner. Unfortunately his luck ran out on the opening lap when he was hit from behind by another competitor. The Brazilian was tipped into a spin, which left him last at the end of lap one. Nonetheless, Fabio was determined not to be beaten, and started a magnificent fightback through the field that was one of the highlights of the race. By the time Fabio handed over to Duval their Honda NSX had already climbed to an impressive 10th overall, and at the end of the race the crew were a brilliantly-deserved fourth. Fabio said: “It may not have been the best race of the year for us in terms of results, but it was certainly the most exciting. The contact on the opening lap wasn’t my fault and I wasn’t happy to be last at the end of it, but I saw it as an opportunity to make up places and after that things went according to plan. Our race pace is very clear from the number of people we passed, and I’m sure it won’t be long now until we are back on top of the podium.” Fabio’s Japanese GT Championship campaign will resume on the Autopolis circuit at the start of October.
