TRYING WEEKEND FOR MORTARA AT THE NURBURGRING
 Signature Team driver Edoardo Mortara has endured a tough weekend at the Nurburgring in Germany, during round seven of the Formula 3 Euroseries.
The French-Italian driver, in only his second year of racing cars, started off the weekend by setting fifth-fastest time in free practice on Thursday at the German circuit, which is home to the European Grand Prix.
Friday was characterised by wet and dry conditions. While Edoardo mainly concentrated on establishing a good qualifying set-up, he still ended up with sixth-fastest time.
The promise came to nothing though when the 20 year-old failed to hook up a clean lap during qualifying. Out of frustration he began to over-drive the car and the end result was that he ended up a lowly 19th, with a slower time than he had set in free practice. To make matters worse, he was docked five positions for a yellow flag infringement in free practice.
Starting race one from 24th place, Edoardo faced an uphill struggle. Nonetheless, he made an explosive start and was up to 12th by the second corner. His stunning comeback drive was halted by a small contact with another competitor, which nonetheless damaged Edoardo’s front suspension. He was forced to come into the pits to fix the damage, re-joining three laps down. Edoardo went back on track to gain more experience once the problem was solved, ending up 22nd overall at the finish.
Consequently he started 22nd for race two but by the end of lap one he had completed another blistering opening to lie 11th. This was despite the fact that the Nurburgring is a notoriously difficult circuit to overtake on, with only one obvious possibility in turn one. He kept pushing hard throughout the race, and maintained 11th to the finish.
Despite his adventurous weekend, Edoardo is still ninth in the overall championship and third in the rookie’s series. He commented: “It was obviously a frustrating time for me, but the consolation is that we were able to make our way from the back of the grid to the front on each occasion under tricky race conditions! That does not happen very often, and it underlines the strength of our race pace. Now we go to Barcelona, where I am aiming for much better things. I’m sure we will soon be fighting for the podium again with a stronger performance in qualifying. The team and the car is certainly more than capable, and I would like to thank Signature again for all their hard work over this weekend.”
Edoardo’s next race is at the Circuit de Catalunya in Spain from September 22-23.
